2011 BMW CS Gran Turismo
BMW has so far demurred on motive power, saying only that a production Concept CS would have an engine "befitting the dynamic character of such a sports [sedan]." Many observers looked at the long hood and immediately thought "V12," perhaps a 600-horsepower 6.0-liter unit derived from the 5.0-liter V10 from BMW's high-performance M5 sedan and M6 coupe and convertible. While that would certainly fit, image-conscious BMW might well decide that a V12 would seem irresponsible amid calls for improved fuel economy and lower carbon emissions in cars of all kinds.
The Competition |
That's why we predict a more modest engine: a 5.0-liter enlargement of the new 7's 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. This could easily be tuned for at least 500 horses, a big jump on the new 750's 407. The result would be a muscle-car-worthy weight-to-power ratio of just 8.6 lb per horsepower, provided weight matches the new 7's 4,300 lb. Which is likely, as the GT is expected to use more lightweight aluminum and composite materials than almost any BMW to date. Performance should thus be satisfying to say the least, as BMW pegs the new 7 at about 5.1 seconds 0-60 mph.
