For Nissan, that string of digits -- seven minutes, eight seconds, and change -- was the mantra of the GT-R Nismo, chanted at the recent Tokyo motor show reveal by everyone from Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn to test driver Michael Krumm. For the world's sports cars (excepting a couple of million-dollar babies), the Nissan's lap time at Germany's Nürburgring Nordschleife course represents a fearsome new bogey.
For all the tiresome obsession with 'Ring times -- the simplistic, reductive refuge of fanboys the world over -- the Nissan's time, a record for a volume production car, says something objective about its real-world capabilities. That lap is fifty seconds quicker than Cadillac's in 2008, when the 556-hp CTS-V became the first showroom sedan to run below eight minutes. The Nismo's lap beats the GT-R's previous best by ten seconds.
So a pit-lane, champagne hose-down for the Nissan, yes. But also caveats: The stratospherically expensive McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder have smashed the seven-minute barrier at the 'Ring. And the GT-R Nismo ain't cheap. The 600-horse bruiser will start at about $150,000 beginning this summer, and it should surpass 160 large with the track package that helped Krumm escort his camouflaged "time attack" GT-R so stirringly around the 12.8-mile course.
That's a lot of dough for a Nissan that, when standing still, might get confused for a Tokyo-tuned Ford Mustang. It costs decisively more than a Chevy Corvette ZR1 and is on par with a Porsche 911 Turbo or an Audi R8 V10, to name three sports cars that add refinement to the endorphin rush. And it's double the price of the first Godzilla to stomp ashore in America, which came in at $70,850 for 2009.
But fear not, PlayStation pushers. A modestly reworked 2015 GT-R is now hitting showrooms. Compared with the Nismo's Hyde, lying in wait to murder unsuspecting exotics, the standard GT-R isn't exactly Jekyll, not with the carryover 545-hp, 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6 and idiot-proof all-wheel-drive system.
Hiroshi Tamura, the GT-R's chief product specialist, did focus on the "GT" side of the name, aiming for a more mature, less punishing car without sacrificing a jot of supercar performance.
That goal has been met, although visible changes are subtle. New adaptive LED headlamps and four-ring taillamps flare to life on start-up. Interior fit and finish are improved, although the available ivory leather seems almost effete for a child wild enough to rock a loincloth.
Nissan actually softened stabilizer and damper rates of the adjustable Bilstein shocks to reduce load fluctuations among the wheels and to boost suspension stroke at high g's. Steering effort is lighter at city speeds. Brembo brakes are recalibrated for more linear response and improved wet performance.
In tandem with twenty-inch Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tires with stiffer sidewalls and a new compound, the added compliance translates into more grip and confidence by better pinning the tires to undulating pavement -- as experienced on the 'Ring, one reason that it's the world's leading gauntlet for handling development.
Captain Nismo's ship makes 481 lb-ft of torque, up from 463 lb-ft in the base GT-R, and spools up its 55 additional horses by using larger, GT3-racing-derived turbos, a higher-pressure fuel pump, and revised ignition timing.
A carbon-fiber wing flips a salute from the carbon trunk lid. There's a ground-scraping lower front fascia and flaring bumpers, with more carbon fabric wrapping the Nismo's nether regions. The body changes generate an extra 220 pounds of downforce at 186 mph. Stiffer adjustable Bilstein dampers join revised front links and more rigid wheel-hub bolts. The body is adhesive bonded. A hollow, 0.7-inch rear antiroll bar trims weight and adds stiffness.
Inside, the Nismo has carbon fiber this and Alcantara that, including a suede-y three-spoke steering wheel. But some obligatory materials, even the stellar Recaro seats, can't paper over the general impression: in contrast with other six-figure supercars, the Nissan's interior is like Carl from Caddyshack guzzling brews in the Bushwood dining room.
GT-R fans, of course, would choose Carl over pompous Judge Smails any day and would take the Nissan over some precious Porsche 911. To them, the GT-R's kill-the-rich personality is integral to its charm.
To gauge the Nismo's charm attack, we were granted some teasing test laps. Clawing around Japan's cozy Sodegaura Forest Raceway, the Nismo felt insanely, unstoppably fast. What else is new? We'll await side-by-side testing of both models to offer judgment.
On two-laners, a standard, right-hand-drive GT-R showed its near-criminal talent -- contributing to the delinquency of grown-ups -- but with welcome gains in civility and ride quality. Added sound deadening and noise cancellation via the Bose audio system quells nasty powertrain frequencies. Shift quality from the six-speed, dual-clutch automatic will no longer provoke panicked calls to the dealer. The driveline feels less lashy, noisy, and mechanical.
Some diehards, we suspect, will accuse Nissan of wimping out. But two miles on brutalized pavement in the 2015 GT-R should quell complaints, along with extraneous whirring, clacking, and trembling. Now -- giving the Nismo its numerical due -- if we could only shut down the white-noise 'Ring debates, the world would be a better place.

Cervinia, Italy - Q4 is more than the Audi-esque name of Maserati’s first-ever all-wheel-drive system. At least, that’s what its engineers and marketers claim. Q4 is an AWD system that transforms the car, be it Quattroporte or mid-size 2014 Maserati Ghibli. So far offered only with the company’s 405-hp 3.0-liter V-6, a V-8 AWD Maserati is possible, but it’s not in the short-term plans. Your humble servant will have to take Maserati’s word for the character transformation, because while contributor Lawrence Ulrich has driven the rear-wheel-drive 2014 Maserati Ghibli, Automobile Magazine HQ in Ann Arbor hasn’t seen one yet.
You may recall that Ulrich loves the 2014 Ghibli because, even with a coddling interior swathed in supple leather and loaded with the usual level of cutting-edge electronic gizmos, it manages to maintain its connection with the driver. Maserati and Cadillac (!) are now the antidotes to the German premium/luxury brands, all three of which are doing to the sport sedan what Japanese automakers did to the midsize sedan a generation ago.
The AWD Ghibli’s best qualities seem to be the same as those Ulrich extolled in the RWD car. The Germanic layer of isolation, which lately has been infesting everything from the BMW 3-series on up, is not to be found in the once-shaky Italian brand’s cars. A drive on snowy, icy roads in the Italian Alps proved that steering feel and seat-of-the-pants feedback is not a lost art. The car transmitted precisely what the weather-affected tarmac could have your two-ton luxury car do with misapplied throttle and/or steering.
That drive was followed with amateur rally trials on a 1.6-kilometer ice circuit near Cervinia. Here, the Maserati Ghibli S Q4 launched as if on dry pavement, even on a dead-start uphill trial, and did whatever one would ask it to do via throttle and steering, whether in normal mode, I.C.E. mode (which is not what it sounds like – it’s the upshift-early, save gas mode), Sport (which plays the ZF eight-speed automatic as quickly and smoothly as Joey DeFrancesco on a Hammond B3), or with the traction and stability controls completely -- and we mean completely -- off. When the stability and traction control intervened, it was only to stifle power to the rear wheels, such as when coming out of an icy turn. With everything turned off, spinning rear wheels and the need for countersteering is your only guide. The turbo V-6 gets brappy when laying into, and lifting from, the throttle. The surprise is what we didn’t hear: not one bit of the sort of German whining and creaking noises of stability and traction controls that warn you that you’re not driving the way your Big Three luxury car likes it.
Maserati’s Q4 is an unusual AWD system that uses an electronically controlled multiplate wet clutch in the transfer case, connecting via the driveshaft to the front axle. It ranges from 100 percent RWD to 50/50 torque split, with no more than 35 percent of the power normally going to the front because of the multilink rear axle’s superior traction capabilities, according to Maserati. The system actually shaves 0.2 second off the RWD Ghibli S’s five-second-flat 0-to-62-mph run, the manufacturer says, although top speed drops 0.5 mph, rounding up to 183 mph. The drive also included the new Maserati Quattroporte S Q4, which felt like the Ghibli S Q4, only slightly bigger.
Engineers also tried to clarify the provenance of the Maserati 3.0-liter engine in the wake of online criticism. The engine is not a Pentastar V-6, they say, although the block is milled and cast in Chrysler’s Pentastar engine factory in Trenton, Michigan. They say that the Maserati engine shares its bore spacing with the Pentastar because both powerplants have the optimum spacing for compact engine design. The Maserati engine also shares oil and fuel pump parts with the Pentastar (which displaces 3.6 liters in Chryslers), though the 3.0 is assembled in Maranello. The Maserati engine can rev much higher than the Pentastar, but the eight-speed transmission limits it to about 7000 rpm.
Whether the issue lingers on the Internet or not, the Maserati Ghibli S Q4, with its direct, refined feel and powerful, torquey, twin-turbo V-6, is a standout in its class. It may or may not have a different character than its RWD version, but it is the executive-class sedan to spread enthusiasts’ faith among the well-heeled in the Midwest and Northeast.

Vehicle sales in the United States are expected to gain slightly this month. LMC Automotive expected sales in the US to surge 1 percent from January 2013, while Kelley Blue Book forecasted a 2 percent gain. Both forecasters estimate auto industry's seasonally adjusted annualized selling rate to be 15.9 million in January 2014, up from 15.4 million in December 2013 and 15.2 million in January 2013. LMC expected retail sales to hike 3 percent to 847,400 units, the highest January level since 2004. J.D. Power and Associates, meanwhile, expects retail transaction prices to set a new January record of over $29,500, up almost $300 year-over-year.
"All systems are a go for a strong and stable US auto market in 2014, with risk of not achieving modest growth diminished," Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting at LMC, said in a statement. He attributed the expected strong 2014 sales to be driven by US economic growth; a robust level of lease maturities; 70 percent more new model launches; and a surge in consumers' willingness to spend.
Carmakers are set to publish their US auto sales figures for January on Feb. 3, 2014. KBB is expecting Nissan North America to log an 8 percent year-over-year sales gain in January. It also expects US sales increase of 6 percent for Chrysler Group, 4 percent for Hyundai-Kia Automotive and 0.2 percent for General Motors.
KBB, however, expects January declines for Ford Motor Co. (4 percent) and for Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. (2 percent). "January is typically the weakest sales month of the year as many consumers take advantage of holiday deals in December," Alec Gutierrez, senior analyst for KBB, said in a statement. "However, winter storms also could impact new-vehicle sales this month, as much of the country deals with historically cold weather and snowstorms.”

Mansory G-Couture G 55 AMG
The auto refiner Mansory is offering a seven-unit limited edition luxury vehicle based on the Mercedes-Benz G 55 AMG – the G-Couture. A luxury vehicle class of its own right, the G-Couture does not impresses with its looks but only with its technical aspect. For instance, the G-Couture luxury SUV has its entire exterior – including the lower window edge and the roof -- are made of carbon, known for its excellent lightness and strength. To further improve the quality of this ultra-light material, Mansory employed the autoclave-prepreg-method, in which the carbon is compressed strongly in a special pressure chamber that no more air inclusions remain in the material. This very cost-intensive method is typically employed in aviation and aerospace. Mansonry also paid special attention into modifying the SUV’s engine. The refiner replaced the majority of the engine components with high-performance parts from the Mercedes-Benz SLR, resulting to a G-Couture powerplant that provides up to 700 hp (515 kW) of output and 880 Nm of torque, compared with G 55 AMG’s 507 hp (373 kW) of output and 700 Nm of torque. The G-Couture boasts of riding on four high-performance tires Pirelli Scorpion with the dimension 305/35 R 23 fitted onto one-part 23-inch SUV-rims.

Cadillac Elmiraj Concept
If you are wondering what Cadillac's future lineup-topping unit may look like, then you just have to see its Elmiraj grand coupe concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show. In a statement, General Motors said that the Elmiraj explores "new dimensions for Cadillac's ongoing expansion." At 205 inches, the rear-wheel-drive, two-door coupe is 3 inches longer than the XTS, which is currently considered as the biggest car in Cadillac's lineup. The Elmiraj is underpinned by a platform that also underpins "an ongoing Cadillac vehicle development project slated for future production," according to GM. This project may refer to a large rwd sedan that is being developed for the top of its lineup to rival the Mercedes-Benz S class, BMW 7 series and other top-end sedans. The Elmiraj has a large grille that dons a new Cadillac emblem. It lets go of classic laurel wreath while leaving behind a streamlined version of the shield.
Sources told Automotive News that the new badge may appear on production cars as early as 2015, although a Cadillac spokesman has said a decision has yet to be made. In a statement, GM said that the design idea for a revised crest "reflects the fact that Cadillac's unmistakable symbol has evolved dozens of times through history to mark new eras or design achievements."
According to the carmaker, the Elmiraj is not a thinly veiled version of a future production car just like other concepts, but is instead intended to preview at the future design direction for the top end of Cadillac's portfolio. Bob Ferguson, senior vice president, Global Cadillac, said in a statement that the Elmiraj "provides a look inside the Cadillac Studio on how we envision performance and luxury for the next generation of luxury drivers." Despite that, the Elmiraj suggests that GM may consider a coupe version of the future big sedan, which according to sources would be launched sometime in 2015.
